This scheme demanded a sophisticated structural solution as the site was directly over an existing underground line. The hotel had to be supported on the existing retaining walls to the underground tunnel, which were constructed of Victorian brickwork.
Working as the Contractor’s engineers within a design and build contract, we evaluated the scheme proposed by the client’s design team and developed the structural design to a stage where it was ready for construction.
The scheme’s structural scheme included a first floor reinforced concrete slab that carried all the upper floors and spanned the full width of the building and footings built on a series of springs to stop the building vibrating as trains passed by underneath.
